Message from Michael Ary, Director of Bands
If you haven’t already begun to feel it, the whirlwind that is the end of the school year is here. Between now and the end of the school year, the calendar is packed. Below I’m going to highlight items that are either performances or affect our daily class schedule. As you will see there is only 1 weeks left that has a normal 5 consecutive days of in-class learning for all of our students.
Pre-UIL Concert: Tuesday, April 6th is our pre-UIL concert for students in the Concert Band (1st period), Symphonic Band (4th period), and Wind Ensemble (3rd period). Attire for this concert (and for UIL later in April) is “Sunday best” – most of the boys will wear slacks, dress shirt and tie; most girls will wear a dress; we just ask that the student try to avoid wearing jeans.
Because we will not have played together as an ensemble since class on Thursday, we are structuring this concert a bit differently. The Concert Band will start on stage at 6pm, the Symphonic at 7pm, and the Wind Ensemble at 8pm. Each ensemble will start with a warm-up/ fundamentals session, then we will have an open rehearsal over the music just like we do daily in class, then towards the end of our hour we will perform the music in preparation for UIL. I encourage the families of the students on stage to join us for the full hour. Come see and hear what you student does every day in class and then hear the culminating performance.
KISD safety protocols now have indoor facilities at 75% capacity for spectators. We have been instructed to ask our families to leave at least one empty seat between parties. To help us allow the families of the students on stage to safely enjoy their student’s performance, we ask that our families only be in the audience for their student’s hour (Concert Band 6-7pm, Symphonic Band 7-8pm, Wind Ensemble 8-9pm).
