Message from Michael Ary, Director of Bands
This week we have rehearsals Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday with a Friday night Homecoming football game. Friday is a Teacher Professional Development Day/Student Holiday. Friday afternoon we will still have a run-through rehearsal. Friday night, the band will perform postgame since the Homecoming coronation ceremony will take place during halftime of the game.
Thursday afternoon there will be a real, live pep rally at the end of the school day. KVA students are not allowed on campus before 2:35pm, so only our face-to-face students will be allowed to attend the pep rally. The FTF band students will receive a wristband on Thursday that we get them out of class and on to the Mustang football field for the outdoor pep rally. KVA students will join us at 3:30 for practice.
Noon on Friday, November 13th is the deadline for the Freshmen to enter the 9th Grade Region Band audition process. Click here for the Freshmen Region entry form. The audition is completely online this year.

Starting this week and for the remainder of the season, the woodwind, brass and percussion students are expected to wear a white shirt to all rehearsals. We are struggling with our upper-body facings and carriage during the performance and received many comments about that at our Katy Marching Fest pre-UIL the other night. When one student is wearing blue, the next neon orange, the next red & white stripes, the next black, the next tie-dye, everything ends up being camouflaged and you can’t see the discrepancies student-to-student very well. But when we put on our uniforms and everyone looks alike, the differences are extremely noticeable. So we need to unify what we look like during practices, as well.
Many of the top bands already wear white to practices, so it’s our time to do the same. The shirts don’t have to be plain white shirts, but they do need to be a white shirt. Some graphics and writing is ok as long as the shirt is white – the students’ chest and shoulders are what we need to see the most. On days that it’s cold students can still layer up and then put the white shirt on top of their sweat shirts. We started announcing this to the students on Wednesday so they should already know about this and be planning on what shirts they can wear to practice. I know in some groups that have gone to unified rehearsal attire, some students have gone out and purchased a 5-pack of Hanes undershirts and other students just pulled white t-shirts out of their closet.
Click here to see a clip of my HS alma mater from a rehearsal of theirs last week so you can see how much more visible students are when they all wear white shirts

Project Grad Basket
It’s time to put together our annual contribution to the Project Grad Holiday Home Tour. This year, the band will be contributing a basket with a holiday gift wrap theme. The basket will be raffled at the Holiday Home Tour and proceeds will benefit Project Grad which supports our senior class. There are items in a range of prices from $5.49 to $25. Please take a look at the list and donate an item if you can. All items should ship to Shakira Luna for delivery to the Project Grad team. Email firstname.lastname@example.org with any questions or if you are interested in purchasing tickets for the Holiday Home Tour. Click here for more information. We need all items by November 15th, so please order as soon as you can. Thanks for your support!
We use the Helper Helper app to manage volunteer opportunities throughout the year. Please visit tiny.cc/helpjetband to register. Once you receive an email with your temporary password, you will be able to download the Helper Helper app and see open opportunities. This is a manual process, so you will not receive your password right away.
Every student and parent must register with a unique email address. The email address will be your username, so if you share an email, you will not have your own account. We use this system to track membership in the booster organization and track volunteer hours. It is also a great way for students to keep track of their service hours (great for leadership and scholarship applications).
Here is some additional information on the open positions that are remaining along with contact info for additional questions. If there is no other contact info provided, please email email@example.com if you are interested in any of the following opportunities:
