Message from Mike Ary, Director of Bands
Thank you to everyone that volunteered at the mattress sale and to those of you that helped refer customers. While we came short of our goal, we still sold quite a few mattresses and will make a great profit on such an easy fundraiser.
This past Saturday was the UIL Solo & Ensemble Contest; we had 19 woodwind solos, 12 brass solos, 1 woodwind quarter, and 1 brass quartet make a 1. If your student got a first division on a memorized class 1 solo or a first division on a class 1 ensemble and wishes to perform at the UIL Texas State Solo and Ensemble Contest in Austin on either June 1,2 or 3rd, they need to let Mr. Ary know this week so we can enter them into the contest. You will be responsible for paying for the entry fee ($20 per solo and $10 per ensemble member PLUS there is a $25 licensing fee), paying for your accompanist (and they will probably charge you a lot for their transportation to and from Austin), and providing your own transportation. Katy ISD is no longer paying for TSSEC or providing any transportation. Instead we will once again have the Katy Young Artist Competition on May 18. We HIGHLY recommend that you chose KYAC over TSSEC since it’ll be here in Katy, way cheaper, and way easier to figure out. More details on how to sign-up for KYAC will be forthcoming.
The Symphony Orchestra (which features 32 of our top band students and Mr. Ary as a co-conductor) has our UIL Concert & Sight-Reading tomorrow at 3:15pm at Tompkins High School.
I hope everyone has a great Spring Break. Please remind your student to take their instrument and music home over the break. Even if you are traveling, they can study the music, finger through their parts, buzz mouthpieces, etc. When we get back from the break we only have 8 classes until our pre-UIL concert on March 28th.
